چکیده
The identi®ability problem is addressed for n-compartment linear mammillary and catenary models, for the common case of input and output in the ®rst compartment and prior information about one or more model rate constants. We ®rst de®ne the concept of independent constraints and show that n-compartment linear mammillary or catenary models are uniquely identi®able under nÿ 1 independent constraints. Closed-form algorithms for bounding the constrained parameter space are then developed algebraically, and their validity is con®rmed using an independent approach, namely joint estimation of the parameters of all uniquely identi®able submodels of the original multicompartmental model. For the noise-free (deterministic) case, the major eects of additional parameter knowledge are to narrow the bounds of rate constants that remain unidenti®able, as well as to possibly render others identi®able. When noisy data are considered, the means of the bounds of rate constants that remain unidenti®able are also narrowed, but the variances of some of these bound estimates increase. This unexpected result was veri®ed by Monte Carlo simulation of several dierent models, using both normally and lognormally distributed data assumptions. Extensions and some consequences of this analysis useful for model discrimination and experiment design applications are also noted. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we establish a mathematical model of two species with stage structure and the relation of predator±prey, to obtain the necessary and sucient condition for the permanence of two species and the extinction of one species or two species. We also obtain the optimal harvesting policy and the threshold of the harvesting for sustainable development. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rig...

We consider a single-species model which is composed of several patches connected by linear migration rates and having logistic growth with a threshold. We show the existence of an aggregating mechanism that allows the survival of a species which is in danger of extinction due to its low population density. Numerical experiments illustrate these results. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights ...

A two-dimensional bio®lm model was developed based on the concept of cellular automata. Three simple, generic processes were included in the model: cell growth, internal and external mass transport and cell detachment (erosion). The model generated a diverse range of bio®lm morphologies (from dense layers to open, mushroom-like forms) similar to those observed in real bio®lm systems. Bulk nutri...

Conditions are presented for uniform strong persistence of non-autonomous semi ̄ows, taking uniform weak persistence for granted. Turning the idea of persistence upside down, conditions are derived for nonautonomous semi ̄ows to be point-dissipative. These results are applied to time-heterogeneous models of S±I±R±S type for the spread of infectious childhood diseases. If some of the parameter fun...

Global existence and regularity results are provided for weakly coupled ®rst order hyperbolic systems modeling the propagation of the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), a retrovirus of domestic cats (Felis catus).
